Cleaning and preparing your exterior timber for coating

Before you get to work coating your timber, it is important that you always prepare the surface prior to coating. We recommend using Cabot’s Deck Clean. Deck Clean prepares the timber to better absorb coatings like stains and oils. It’s no secret that good preparation will ensure the best results.

Firstly consider what coatings if any you have on your timber already, Fill holes and imperfections with a suitable timber putty.

  • For new timber (bare timber) allow the timber to weather for a minimum 4 weeks prior to preparing it with Cabot’s Deck Clean.
  • For the best results on badly weathered and grey timber which has never been coated, sand the timber back to a fresh substrate, then clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean.
  • For previously painted or varnished timber, remove back to bare timber by using a paint stripper, or sander, then clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean prior to re-coating.
  • For previously stained and oiled timber clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean prior to re-coating.

Cleaning your timber with Cabot’s Deck Clean

Cabot’s Deck Clean is a versatile and powerful water based preparation product that helps to restore exterior timber to a clean sound surface for oiling, staining, clear finishing or painting. It removes dirty oils, grease and other contaminants and helps breakdown the oils and tannins within the timber so that the stains or oils can bind to the surface and perform consistently.

Preparation Instructions

  1. Apply Cabot’s Deck Clean with a stiff bristled brush or broom. This ensures your timber is totally clean of dust, dirt, wax, grease, tannins and oils before coating. Refer to the label instructions for additional preparation requirements.
  2. If the timber has particularly stubborn greasy areas, rub down with mineral turps and wipe off any excess with a clean rag.
  3. Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the surface, if the water is absorbed, the timber is ready for coating. If the water beads on the surface, repeat the cleaning process again using Cabot’s Deck Clean.

Note: Remember the effort you put in at this stage will help lay a sound base to ensure long lasting results.
