For the last two weeks we were working in a West Harbour house which was built on 1990’s. Wallpapering was popular by that time. Over more than 20 years, the wallpaper color is fading away. It’s time to refresh the interior. Owner decided to do painting of the whole interior including ceilings, walls, all frames and all doors.
Wallpaper removal works
Our painters started by covering the carpet by masking film. It took one painter almost one day to cover all floor. Then we used 3 days to remove the wall paper. To do these jobs while we have to take care of the carpet costed more time than an empty floor. Luckily this time the removal works were not that hard, i should say it’s below average difficulties.
This is when the first layer wallpaper removed. You probably don’t know that there are two layers of one wall paper. Yes it is, though we hope there’s only one layer but that’s the common design and nature of most wall paper.
The top layer is more like a thin plastic paper. There are some painters who paint over the second layer without removing them. It could be pigment sealer or oil based primer. We found it’s not ideal. The bottom paper will bubble anyway no mater what.
This photo is when they are all completely removed. The original plastering work appeared. We tried our best not to do much damage to the gib board.
The under coating or priming is important. We never over ride this practice. It helped a lot to achieve better final results and it accurately save our painters time for the properly top coat painting. Dulux suggested 1Step Prep brand for priming. Yes they are right, it works better than Prepcoat and Gold Lable sealers.
Ceiling paint is Dulux Ceiling White, it’s a very basic and popular white color flat paint, smooth and easy to apply. In bathrooms we use Kitchen and Bathroom ceiling paint.
Skimming and sanding
Skimming is a simple work that painters used for partially repair or plastering the wall, it’s to hide the defects. We use yellow contract filler rather than Plus4. Those yellow parts are partly repaired, then sanded before extra priming.
We posted these photos and progress to show you how we work step by step trying to achieve a better painting results. If you hire us to do your house painting, we are pretty much following the same procedure and workmanship. This is after the under coating.
Once the ceiling is painted, it looks flat, clean and the space is brighter.
The first coat after primer. Wall paint: Dulux Wash & Wear low sheen interior, color Mt Aspiring Quarter. Frames are semi gloss enamel Dulux color Southern Alps white.
Once it’s done the final day is final touching up and cleaning. It was the first time the house was painted after it was built in 1990’s. Two bathroom were wall paper removed and painted by previous owner. After more than 20 years, it’s a good investment to refresh the house interior with a very reasonable budget of $12,500 for this 235sqm two stories house. Half of our efforts is to remove the wall paper and make all walls painting ready.
